The edit mesh modifier is useful if you want to alter the shape of an object, but have the ability to restore it back to its original state. Its functionality is identical to when you convert an object to an editable mesh. Multiple edit mesh modifiers can be stacked, each containing the different changes you make allowing you to experiment without losing any of the original shape.
