If you are going above two iterations of mesh smooth, then something is wrong with you low level mesh and you should go back and correct any underlaying problems.

Notice how mesh smooth operates on the different cubes. The less you refine a detail in your mesh, the more it gets smoothed out by mesh smooth. The cube on the far right retains its overall shape with just rounded corners, whereas the cube on the far left is basicly turned into a sphere.

Mesh smooth is not a magic button. The more you refine the edge flow and detail of your mesh at the lowest level, the better it will look when it comes to smoothing.

It is easy to spot newbie work, as it is often smoothed to death.
