Point cache allows you to save all sub object animation i.e. vertex, polygon, edge etc animations to a file on disk. This is very useful as a backup incase your object gets deleted or the animation becomes corrupted. It also means you can play back segments of an animation rather than the whole thing which could result in very slow playback on some machines.
